Nintendo Touts Strong Sales Before Holiday Season

Ahead of the October NPD numbers Nintendo has announced that they sold 507,000 Wii systems during the month, giving them the #1 spot among all the consoles.  This is a nearly 10% spike over the September numbers and brings the systems sales in North America at more than 22 million units to date.  Nintendo contributes much of their success to titles like Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus, along with their recent price drop to $199.  Nintendo also mentioned DS sales for the month hit 457,000 units bringing that system to more than 34 million units to date in North America.  This meant Nintendo finished #1 & #2 in console sales for the month of October.

“Nintendo’s year-to-date share of total game sales and total industry revenues are up over the same period last year,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “We are very appreciative of the continued, strong consumer response to both of our systems as we head into the holidays, and are excited to bring to them our key games, like New Super Mario Bros Wii, which launches this Sunday, and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, which launches Dec. 7.”

Along with the strong console sales Nintendo also had 4 titles place in the top 10 software sales for the month.

  • Wii Fit Plus at No. 5 with nearly 232,000 sold
  • Wii Fit Plus (with the Wii Balance Board accessory) at No. 6 with more than 209,000 sold
  • Wii Sports Resort with two Wii MotionPlus accessories at No. 8 with nearly 179,000 sold
  • Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days for Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi at No. 10 with more than 169,000 sold.

Overall it was a very strong month for sales, on the back of some solid titles and a new retail price.  They have two very strong titles still to be released for the year with New Super Mario Bros. Wii and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks.
