Sonic 2 is the best Sonic followed closely by Sonic. Sonic 3, S&K and Sonic CD follow in that order. While I agree with M.H. Mason that many of Sonic's recent ventures have failed their has been a few small gems. You just have to pick up a Gameboy or DS to discover them. Both the Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush series successfully recapture the spirit, the gameplay and speed of the Genesis series and in many ways the games hold their own and are even faster than their Genesis counterparts.

Let's see, I have Sonic 2 for Sega Genesis, Nintendo Wii Virtual Console, Xbox Live Arcade, on Sonic's Mega Collection game, on a Sega computer disc, yeah, I love this game.

SECOND BEST GAME EVER!!! It would be Number 1, except Super Mario Bros. was invented.

Actually, you practically finished your list in the first paragraph; I think other than perhaps Sonic CD, those are the only great games in the series. While I can appreciate Sega valiantly trying to keep the hedgehog relevant, none of his recent or prior work beyond the 16-bit stuff has wowed me.

In regards to Sonic 2 specifically, I think it's creeping up on S&K as my all-time favorite. I always hold the original in high regard because, well, it was my first one; but Sonic 2 definitely refined the experience.
