Sega Abandoning Hardcare Wii Market?

During the latest edition of 4 Guys 1Up Constantine Hantzopolous, Sega of America studio Director, said the following:

“That begets the question, you know, are we gonna do more mature titles for the Wii and it’s like … probably not.”

This comes after Sega attempted to hit that market in 2009 with titles like The Conduit, MadWorld and House of the Dead: Overkill.  These titles didn’t do as well as Sega was hoping and it looks like they might be pulling out of that market.  That doesn’t mean Sega will stop making games for Wii, but they may be looking towards more casual fare.

Games like The Conduit, while initially praised ended up being less than stellar affairs, plagued by lag issues, network inconsistency and easy to hack infrastructure.  Early praise will only get you so far and that word of mouth that publishers praise so much will doom your game if it’s not that good and I think that may have been the issue with those games.

I think it’s been proven that Nintendo fans don’t want overly bloody shooters or language filled blood baths.  There’s a hardcore market out there for that system, but you have to fill it with good games.  Call of Duty sells well on Wii, even if Infinity Ward doesn’t think it’s possible.  Residen Evil sells well on Wii.  Mario sells well on Wii.  Mega Man sells well on Wii.  These are all hardcore experiences that people want on that system.
