Nintendo Achieves Multiple Records in 2009
Despite the fact it seems like every developer under the sun, or at least Capcom, Sega and Ubisoft, says that there isn’t a market for their games on Wii Nintendo managed to achieve a number of sales records in 2009.
The records started with the strongest December sales they’ve ever seen with over 7 million combined Wii and DS units. These number also contributed to the best year for sales ever. DS saw 11.9 million units sold for the year and Wii saw 9.6 million units fly off store shelves. To date Wii has sold more than 27.2 million units and has sold those more quickly than any other console in history while the DS has surpassed the lifetime sales of the GBA with 38.8 million units sold to date.
Of course, with great hardward you have to have great software or those number don’t mean a thing and Nintendo did quite well in the software department for 2009. In December alone Nintendo had six of the top 10 best selling games; New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii at No. 1 with more than 2.8 million sold, Wii Sports Resort™ at No. 2 with more than 1.7 million sold, Wii Fit™ Plus with the Wii Balance Board™ accessory at No. 3 with more than 1.7 million sold, Wii Play™ at No. 6 with more than 1.0 million sold, Mario Kart™ Wii at No. 7 with more than 936,000 sold and Mario & Luigi™: Bowser’s Inside Story for Nintendo DS Lite and Nintendo DSi at No. 10 with more than 656,000 sold.
For the entire year of 2009 seven of the top 10 best selling games were released on Nintendo platforms with Pokemon Platinum joining that list above having sold more than 2 million units.
