Quick Hits: Mike Roush & Chris Osborn

Last week for our Quick Hit interview we sat down with Alex Neuse of Gaijin Games and found out a little bit about him.  This week we’ll continue with Gaijin Games and his cohorts in crime Mike Roush and Chris Osborn.

Can you introduce yourself to everyone?

MR: My name is Mike Roush and I make most of the squares for Gaijin Games.

CO: Oi! I’m Chris Osborn, the guy who codes for Gaijin Games.

What are your favorite games from the past?

MR: Sid Meiers – Alpha Centauri. This might not be one of my favorite’s but I have been thinking about it a lot over the past few months, and recalling all the fun I had with that game. Diablo II was AMAZING… Q3 – and Q3 wtih Urban Terror.

CO: Rez, System Shock 1, Ultima 7, Rings of Power, Doom, Phantasy Star 2

What are your favorite games from this generation?

MR: Being a goofy Sci-Fi nerd… I will go with Mess Effect. I would have gone with Fallout 3 but I got to have video game sex with a blue girl in Mass Effect!

CO: Super Meat Boy, BIT.TRIP BEAT (srsly!), GTA 4, Mass Effect, Flower, Portal

If you could meet one other person in the gaming industry who would it be?

MR: Jeez, I have no idea. Tony Miller?

CO: John Carmack. He inspired me to dedicate my life to game programming.

If someone came to you wanting to know what it would take to do your job what piece of advice would you give them?

MR:  Learn how to break out of your art style and be willing to breach your comfort zone.

CO: Start coding games! Nothing makes you learn faster than actually producing a finished product. With a little effort anyone can get a game released on XBLIG or the iPhone :)

If you weren’t making games now what do you think you’d be doing?

MR: I would be doing CAD and or high end 3d modeling.

CO: Running some super-crazy tech startup?

Thank you very much to Mike and Chris for joining us today.
