Unknown Mario Glitch?
Hey folks. I need a little help. This glitch was recorded recently at OVGE and it was sent to me asking if I’d ever seen it before. It’s a glitch that occurred during a run in Super Mario Bros. for the NES. It’s from the Nintendo World Championships cartridge and was encountered by our young friend Nathan. If I am understanding the voices in the video he says it happened after he reset the system and got back into the game. I’ve never seen this glitch before. I just wanted to see if any of you have ever seen something like this occur. I’ve seen plenty of interesting glitches from Super Mario Bros., but this one was new to me. So, let me know if you’ve seen it. Pass it along to your friends and ask them. I want to find out if this is a new glitch or something that people have seen happen numerous times before.

This is caused by a malfunction in the mirroring control circuit on the cart. You can replicate this in the FCEUX emulator by using the menu option debug > nametable viewer > single screen (table 1). Ordinarily (certainly on a normal SMB cart) this could only be caused by a poor connection to the NES (the same way you get a non-booting game or glitched graphics on a dusty cart) or a malfunction on the board, but its conceivable that the special NWC board was glitched by the reset, since it contains the ability to change the mirroring control logic through software depending on which game it is playing. The exact cause may be hard to discern, but the pattern of the glitch is not so shocking.
