Nintendo Okie Podcast – Episode 118

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse from last week’s Amazon Japan debacle, Micah says the words “Animal Crossing toys.”  I think we need to shut off our internet.  It’s the only way we can be safe from all the amazing things Japan has to offer.  Anyway, during the podcast we talk about some games; like Medieval Moves for example.  We also hit what news we could scrape together for the week including the lastest from 38 Studios and an unhealthy amount of rumors and patents.  Great job, Jeremy!

Smash School

The Smash Bros. series is pretty amazing.  Not only is it flooded with fan service for Nintendo enthusiasts but it is also one of the best produced games on the market.  A lot of this is due to the games director, Masahiro Sakurai.  The man is a Nintendo alumni that has worked with/for the company since he was 19.  Sakurai is well known for having an eye for detail and no game shows this off more than Brawl.  Every character’s moves, animations and abilities can be traced back to a former game in some capacity.  Fans have noticed this and are more than willing to share what they have noticed.  Several have produced videos that walk you through each character, explaining all there is to know.  While a quick search will reveal several such videos, this week I am going to point y’all to a couple videos produced by YouTube user CrappyCaptureDevice.  In these two entries, Samus’ moves and animations are broke down in detail letting you know how awesome Smash Bros. really is.  I want to encourage everybody to search out more videos like this.  Smash truly is an amazing series and I don’t know if any one person understands all the tiny references made by Sakurai and his team. Video two after the jump.

Trials Evolution Review (XBLA)

On the surface Trials Evolution may seem like a “bro game.”  It’s all about dirt bikes, it opens with some rap-rock music and you can trick out your rider with all kinds of “bro gear.”  While there is nothing wrong with “bro games” I typically stay away from them as I gravitate towards a different type of game.  Thankfully, Trials Evolution is not a “bro game.”  The outward appearance of dirt bikes and rap-rock music quickly fads away once you discover you are playing a twitch-based platformer.

What You Need To Know
Evolution is the sequel to the wildly popular, 2009 XBLA release, Trials HD.  Just as Trials HD before it, Evolution tasks you with navigating a dirt bike over several courses composed of ramps, jumps and random obstacles.  Your inputs are limited; gas, brake and rider lean.  Using different combinations of the three, you traverse your rider through places he should never be in the first place.  Each track has time limits which are tracked against online leaderboards and everyone on your friends list.  Evolution also sports several modes that throw a unique spin at the terrain conversing; human flight, moon lander, no brakes, etc.  New for Evolution is a multiplayer mode where you can race in real-time against your friends on the single player tracks or race four to a track Excitebike style.  Also new – and perhaps most impressive – is the in depth track editor which allows you to construct and share your tracks with the world.

Simple To Play, Hard To Master
Video games are pretty complex these days.  If you explain how to play Madden to somebody their head could explode.  Evolution has a very limited number of inputs you need to worry about.  This makes the barrier to entry quite low.  However, Trials Evolution is not – NOT – a simple game.  The level of accuracy needed while playing is astounding. ShootMania Looks Awesome!

Check out this trailer for ShootMania: Storm.  I have been on the fence on how well a first-person shooter based on user generated levels could work but this stuff look crazy!  Granted you can make anything look good in a trailer but this bumped ShootMania way up in my mind.  The dubstep music helps too.

Nintendo Okie Podcast – Episode 117

This podcast is almost not about video games.  It starts off with a huge tangent about Amazon.co.jp and it ends with the Statue of Liberty fighting a Gundam.  I think Tony has some news at some point but we are weeks away from E3, so there is no news.  Can’t E3 get here sooner?

Nintendo Okie Podcast – Episode 116

We got the full crew back this week as Shannon has returned from his fight against the evil, virus king.  Another slow news week but we manage to fill out the show with a little more WIYW talk than normal.  As for the news itself, we hit a collection of smaller stories with some longer quotes… if you’re into that sort of thing.  Also, I explode into a GameStop rant towards the end of the show.  E3 is one week closer.  I’m so not ready for it.
