Sony has confirmed that the upcoming release of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception will include an online pass. What this means, if you don’t know, is that there will be a code included in all new copies of the game that you can enter to access the online portions of the game. If you buy the game used it will cost you a fee, usually $10.
That’s not all. The company has confirmed, in a statement posted via Destructoid, that this will become the norm for all online enable games from Sony.
“Online Pass will be incorporated into Uncharted 3 and future Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) games with online functionality.”
We’ve seen companies use all manner of ways to entice people to buy copies of games new, rather than buying them used as it deprives them of sales, and money they feel they rightly deserve. Some companies offer you deals on downloadable content. Some companies give you exclusive content for buying the game new. The issue is being debated wildly among the gaming community with some people siding with the developers and others that feel buying games used is no different than buying anything else second hand.
Whether it’s right or wrong will be debated for a long time and no method to combat used sales has really proven more effective than another. No matter what side you’re on, if you play Sony published games prepare to pay for online content if you buy the game second hand.
