Theathrhythm: Persona 4

July 17, 2012 1 comment

Theaterhythm: Final Fantasy just released and it puts a lot of the Final Fantasy characters into an interesting music-based RPG game.  The art style is not taken from any of the games, but is a new style that all of the characters are redrawn in.  I think it’s an interesting concept and one that could be used to create a rhythm game based on a number of RPGs.  One fan thought so too and created these Persona 4 characters using that same art style.  Shelby, Micah, enjoy.

The Last Story – Trailer

February 15, 2012 2 comments

Now that we know that Xenoblade Chronicles is coming to North America I’m going to pimp The Last Story as often as I can.  Here’s another trailer for the European release of the game.  It looks amazing.

I came to a realization, though, watching this trailer.  It just hit me that Hironobu Sakaguchi, the head of Mistwalker, left Square Enix where he was making Final Fantasy to create a game called The Last Story.   I can’t believe it took me this long to realize how similar those titles were.

Enjoy the trailer.  I did.

The Most Powerful Person In The World

November 19, 2011 1 comment

Have you ever been is a situation where you have to explain why video games aren’t just for little kids? I imagine we have all had that discussion at one time or another. Despite our best efforts, some people just don’t get it. I wish I could make all those people watch this video. I stumbled on this a few years ago and I have always wanted to share it. I guess now is the time. Created by Thuyen Nguyen (a.k.a. YouTube user evaneon) the video is titled The Most Powerful Person In The World and with the combination of some game clips and a few simple words, it sums up why video games are so unique. It does a good job of tugging at my emotions to remind me why I love games so much. I’m sure y’all will like it. Once you agree, go here to download the high quality version.

Operation Rainfall Asks People to Buy Final Fantasy

August 12, 2011 1 comment

In a bid to make sure that Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime gets the hint, Project Rainfall is going into phase two of their initiative. This not only asks European users to buy a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles when it releases, but now it’s asking North American gamers to buy a Virtual Console title.

Xenoblade Chronicles launches in Europe on August 19th. On that day to show “an intent to purchase” Opertain Rainfall is asking people to buy a copy of Final Fantasy from the Virtual Console. I have to say that I applaud the effort, but Final Fantasy is a bit out of the league of these other two games. Final Fantasy has been the best selling RPG series in North America. Many people already own a copy of this game, probably from the Virtual Console as well. I do.

Yesterday we reported that Reggie said Nintendo is keeping a close eye on the game’s performance in Europe. I propose that Gaz goes out and buys 10 copies of the game to help bolster those sale a little. If you’re in North America, though, and you’re following Operation Rainfall you should be buying Final Fantasy on the 19th. I still don’t know what that would prove.

Con-soul Searching: Final Fantasy’s Fickle Foundation

The video game industry is more reliant on sequels than any other entertainment medium. It’s the nature of the beast. As technology advances and systems update, games have to grow along with them. Several of today’s big franchises have seen multiple iterations and I often wonder how hard developers must struggle to keep these games familiar while also producing new experiences.

Final Fantasy is the first one that comes to mind. FF has been around for five generations of systems; almost 30 years. Most recently, FFXIII was met with mixed reviews and high sales. I’ll admit right now that I haven’t played FFXIII so that may discredit my opinion for some, but it seems FFXIII is a game that struggles to find it purpose. I have heard opinions from several people that have played the game and the majority agree it takes too long for the game to become fun. I think the problem is Square’s confusion on where to take the series. For so long now the series has been structured on several Read more…

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes Of Light Review

November 13, 2010 Leave a comment

A review by Josh Beebe

I’m a big Final Fantasy fan.  I love the stories.  I love leveling up.  I love fighting bosses.  I even love collecting equipment.  I’ll go ahead and boldly say that FFX was the best in the series, topping even the monstrous FF7.  However, when you think of Final Fantasy these days, it just isn’t the same as it used to be.  You used to lose hours upon hours of time and were punished heavily for not saving.  The difficulty was drastically increased back in the 8 and 16-bit days, and this game is a direct throwback.

The 4 Heroes of light goes back to Final Fantasy’s original roots.  Traveling the top down world, you will eventually meet your fellow party members, in which you can have up to 4 at a time.  You equip these party members with the best equipment that you can find and go out to save the day.  Nothing new here; combat will also feel familiar.  It’s very traditional turn based combat where you select an action for each character to perform, then the battle plays out.  I have one huge complaint here.  Generally, you can always select a target for your action.  If you want to attack an enemy, you would select the enemy to attack.  If you wanted to heal your comrade, you would select the comrade to heal.  For some reason it was decided to leave this option out….WHAT??  Yea, it can get frustrating.  The game will auto-pick your target.  It does an okay job of selecting the right target, but there’s the occasional “well that’s just great” moment.  Sometimes you feel as if you could have won the battle if you had the option to target correctly.

The battle system; the staple of any Final Fantasy game.  It’s different every game, and always interesting to say the least.  The system implemented here is a crown and AP system.  You essentially equip different crowns to change your abilities and statistics.  It feels a lot like the job system.  It is pretty cool when you get a new crown though.  To gain new abilities, you equip these crowns with different types of gems, which are found by defeating enemies.  And apparently, wearing different crowns changes your entire outfit.  AP is what you use to perform an action.  You have a total of 5 AP.  Each turn you gain AP, and you are even given an option to boost your AP at an expense of a turn.  It’s not much, but it works.

One thing to note about this game is that it’s difficult.  I found myself anxiously looking for a save point and usually dying before I found one.  Even at the first boss, I felt that I was severely lacking something, but I wasn’t quite for sure what that was.  After roaming around and beating a few baddies, I eventually triumphed.

Overall, this game doesn’t bring anything new to the table.  But is it fun?  Sure.  If you like traditional turn based battles, this will definitely occupy your time.  For me, the best thing it has going for it is its old school charm.
