Yacht Club Games Audio Interview

ycg

Recently, Tony and I had a chance to chat with a few people from Yacht Club Games; the studio behind the upcoming Shovel Knight. We recorded the whole thing since we figured y’all might want to listen. We asked them a few questions about Shovel Knight, indie game development and bad puns. I always enjoy chatting with developers and learning about how games are made. Thanks again to Nick (a.k.a. Woz), Sean, Erin and Ian for taking the time to talk to us. Be advised, the audio levels on this one are a little rough. The four members from Yacht Club were huddled around a laptop’s built in mic. I did the best I could to clean it up but there are spots when things are garbled.

If You’re Not Already, Then You Need To Pay Attention To Shovel Knight

Shovel Knight stretchGoals_200

Yacht Club Games is probably not a name you’re familiar with, but you are familiar with the work of the development team.  The company was formed back in 2011 when Sean Velasco and some other members of the development team at WayForward left to create their own studio.  They have a pedigree of games that includes Contra 4, A Boy and His Blob, Thor: God of Thunder, Mighty Milky Way, and BloodRayne: Betrayal.  Not too long ago they announced their first original title, Shovel Knight; a game that they’re funding through Kickstarter.  They were originally asking for $75,000 to fund the project, a Mega Man inspired SNES style side-scrolling platformer.  To entice people to give further they’ve included a number of stretch goals that reached up to $200,000.  As you can see from the image above they reached that original goal and shattered the last stretch goal.  To celebrate they added the three new goals that you see at the bottom of the image. Nintendo Okie Podcast – Episode 160

Nintendo Okie Podcast LogoWhat time is it? Podcast o’clock! Join us as we talk about video games and food. Why do we talk about food so much? It always makes me hungry. Anyway, this week Shannon tries to spread his yo-yo addiction, Tony thinks his internet crashes, I burst into spontaneous song and Micah doesn’t show up. That, folks, is what we call a podcast.

Nintendo Okie Podcast – Episode 157

Nintendo Okie Podcast LogoFor the second week in a row, we have a two hour podcast. This has to stop. It’s already too late for this show so you might as well listen to it… or as much as you want to anyway. We got the normal crew back for the show this week. Enjoy our voices and witty-ish banter as we talk about Runner 2, Nano Assaults, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Epic Mickey 2, Journey, Flower and Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition. After we talk for too long about the games we’ve been playing, we hit the news of the week in a “lightning round” fashion. Download, listen, enjoy!

Starring – Tony, Micah, Shannon, Shelby
Run time – 2:00:11

I demand you send questions to podcast@nintendo-okie.com. You can also follow us on Twitter, join our Facebook group, subscribe to us on YouTube and talk on our forums. Although I don’t demand you do those things; I just strongly suggest them.

Capcom Swears They Are Doing Something For Mega Man

The Mega Man news has basically been non-existent over the last year or so, unless you count the news of game cancellations. Capcom has been very quiet on anything that they’re doing for the Blue Bomber and fans are getting worried. They do continue to say that they’re working on something for Mega Man’s 25th Anniversary, which occurs this year. Capcom’s Brett Elston is the latest to try and reassure fans (via Rockman Corner):

“Like we’ve said many times, the MM25 plans for the west will go on throughout 2013. We had to focus on SF25 from July~December (because the grand finals ran all the way to 12/8) but ever since SFxMM we’ve directed attention to Mega Man. But, plans and news take time, and that’s why we were clear very early on that we would have to stretch this window through to the end of 2013. When Dec 31, 2013 elapses, feel free to evaluate the anniversary efforts.

Have no fear, they say. There will be something Mega Man related happening this year. They pinky swear. Just because the man who created Mega Man is no longer with the company doesn’t mean they don’t still love him. Trust them. Would they lie?

Gunman Clive Review (eShop)

What do you get when you combine disappearing blocks from Mega Man, mine carts from Donkey Kong Country and old school sci-fi sound effects from Rolling Thunder? The answer to that is one of the most fun games that I have yet to play on the 3DS eShop.

What You Need to Know

Gunman Clive is a side scrolling action platformer. You play as Clive, or two other characters (one of which is available from the start). The Old West has gone sorta sci-fi and your companion (the other human character you don’t choose) has been kidnapped. You just have to run and jump your way through 20 levels, taking out enemy cowboys and other enhanced baddies. It’s two buttons, it’s a brown color palette, and it’s a cowboy and a duck. Read more…

Opinion Herd – 2013 Predictions

December 28, 2012 1 comment

The Opinion Herd Logo

Prediction time, prediction time.  Our game of the year lists have been published.  You know what we thought of some of the best games in the last year.  Now’s the time when we look ahead to next year and try to imagine, guess, predict, prognosticate or whatever you want to say, about the coming year.  What do we think will happen?  Will Luigi’s Mansion actually come out this year and will Tony like it?  That’s the question on everybody’s mind.  The staff here at Nintendo Okie, along with some very special guests, will now try to tell you what’s going to happen in 2013 before it actually does.

Shannon Says:

1. Steam console will be revealed at E3.

2. Animal Crossing: New Leaf won’t see a release till November at best.

3. The Hulu Plus app promised for 3DS back in 2011 still won’t show up in 2013.

4. Ouya console will release around Thanksgiving 2013.

5. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon will get another delay pushing it to a holiday release.

More Mega Man Is Coming…Capcom Swears

November 14, 2012 1 comment

Mega Man fans have a right to be concerned about the future of the Mega Man franchise. The last two games were cancelled by Capcom and they’ve been unusually quiet about the future of the Blue Bomber.  Capcom swears there is going to be more games in the series, you just have to be patient with them.  Capcom’s Christian Svenssen assured people that information is coming.

“I can say with certainty that you’ve not seen the last of the Blue Bomber on consoles and handhelds, and, with luck, we’ll be celebrating his 50th anniversary, including all of the games you’re going to enjoy over the next 25 years,” said Svensson. “That said, an issue we’ve had in the past has been talking about games and announcing them before we’re certain they’re going to come out, which unfortunately has lead to profound disappointment for many fans. So for now, I’m going to have to stay mum about any details.”

I was disappointed that Mega Man Legends 3 was cancelled and they even shelved the demo that fans had input on.  I really hope we’re going to see something.  Mega Man 11 would be tops on my list but I’d also enjoy seeing a return to the X series.  I can understand the company not wanting to announce anything until they have plans in place but if that is their stance, and they’re not talking about it, you have to wonder if they even care about the series anymore.  Fans want to know that they’re going to get more than special appearances in fighting games.
