Wanna Know How Popular Pokemon Is?

March 8, 2011 1 comment

Well, the sales for the first 24 hours of Pokemon Black and Pokemon White, which went on sale this past Sunday should tell you.

In the first 24 hours after hitting stores shelves the two games combined for more than  1 million units.  This easily makes them the fastest selling Pokemon game of all time, breaking the record set by Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl back in April of 2007.

“Longtime Pokémon fans are attracted to the new Pokémon, new battle systems and a new region to explore, while newcomers enjoy the ability to jump in and have fun right away,” said Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America’s senior director of Corporate Communications. “These sales numbers illustrate the continued strength of the Nintendo DS family of systems. Already established as the nation’s best-selling video game platform of all time, the installed base of more than 47 million makes it the ideal hand-held for developers to reach a huge gaming-focused target audience.”

More than 10,000 people were on hand at the Nintendo World Store when the game went on sale Sunday.  Lines were wrapped around the front of the store.  The Presidents of the United States of America were on hand to debut their new song, Can’t Stop Catchin’ Em All, which is was very reminiscent of the old Pokemon Rap.  It listed all of the new Pokemon available in Pokemon Black and Pokemon White.  If you’d like a copy of the song for yourself you can download the MP3 over at IGN.

So, make no mistake about it, people still like Pokemon.  It will be interesting to see how fast these games break the all-time Pokemon sales record.  Just in case you missed it there are 150 new Pokemon to catch and a brand new region to explore.

Battle System Evolved in Pokemon Black and White

January 25, 2011 Leave a comment

Pokemon is one of the most popular franchises that is published by Nintendo.  They’re everywhere and they’ve been on every system Nintendo’s released in a long time.  One of the biggest complaints that some people have is that the games have been pretty much the same since the beginning.

Nintendo is looking to change that feeling with the next releases in the Pokemon franchise; Pokemon Black and Pokemon White.  There are 150 new Pokemon to capture and they’re introducing new three character battles that change up the way you’ve battled other trainers for years.  Now placement in your lineup is very important and could be the key to victory.

C-Gear changes up the way you connect with friends, allowing for one button friend code exchange and new ways to communicate wirelessly.  You’ll even have the ability to randomly battle players from around the world.

Pokemon Black & White Launching this March

December 27, 2010 Leave a comment

It’s being hailed as the last big game for the Nintendo DS before the 3DS finally launches around the world.  It appears that will definitely be the case as Nintendo has announced the North American release date for Pokemon Black & Pokemon White.  The two games will launch on March 6th, 2011 and will feature more than 150 new pokemon and a completely new region to explore.

As with previous releases each game will have pokemon that are exclusive to the individual games.  For example the Legendary Pokemon, Reshiram can only be captured in Pokemon Black while Zekrom can only be captured in Pokemon White.  Additionally there are three new starter pokemon for you to choose from to begin your adventure; Snivey, a Grass-type, Tepig, a fire-type and Oshawott, a water-type.

Both games will retail for $34.99.

Catch ‘Em All Over Again

In the past, I have expressed my concern about there being too many Pokémon.  Little did I know how right I was.  Junichi Masuda, a developer at Game Freak, has stated on his blog that Black and White will have nothing but new Pokémon.  His reasoning behind this choice is that they want to add some new life into the game since they have been fairly repetitive over the last few iterations.  Also, they want all players to have the same feeling of playing with all new Pocket Monsters.

We knew Nintendo would add a few new Pokémon with this game.  They usually add around 100 or so but all new is really surprising to me.  I am going to guess we will see about 230 new Pikachu’s.  There is always a chance that this is all some sort of translation error.  I really need to learn Japanese.

Alongside this announcement of the release window Nintendo also announced that Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver have sold over 8.4 million units collectively worldwide since they launched.  No other details were announced.

Starter Pokemon for Black & White Revealed

And there they are.  From left to right their Japanese names areTsutaja, Pokabu and Mijumaru.  There’s a very good chance those will change for the North American release of the games.  So based on the picture which of those would you choose to start your next Pokemon team?  I’m going with the little pig cause he’s got the best smile.

Nintendo hinted earlier this year that they were working on a new generation of Pokemon games and there is another movie coming out this year that will star new pokemon Zorua and Zoroark.  Those pokemon will also be featured in this new game scheduled to come out later this year.  It will be the true 5th Generation of the Pokemon franchise.  Pokemon.co.jp is expecting to have more details about the games on April 15th so stay tuned for those announcements.
