There Have Been a Lot of Nintendo Controllers Sold

October 25, 2010 2 comments

Chances are that if you’re reading this post then you are part of this statistic.  Nintendo sent out a press release touting that they have sold more than 65 million Wii Remotes.  (I personally own 7)  That doesn’t include the number of Nuchuks or Classic Controllers that have been sold.  Here’s a bit of the statistical breakdown, if you’re interested.

  • 30.41 million included with the Wii hardware
  • 12.92 million sold with Wii Play™
  • 18.56 million white versions sold separately
  • 2.44 million black versions sold separately
  • 467,500 pink versions sold separately
  • 465,200 blue versions sold separately

I’m more than likely going to pick up at least two of the Wii Remote Plus controllers in the very near future so I don’t have to continually add the dongle when I play Wii Sports Resort, and the upcoming Flingsmash.  According to NPD there have been more than 52 million Nunchuk controllers sold as well.  That’s a lot of Nintendo controllers out there.  So, how many Wii Remotes do you have, and are you going to be adding to the list any time soon?

New Wii Remote Coming Soon?

September 24, 2010 1 comment

Gamestop is showing a new entry on their website for the upcoming first party game Flingsmash.  They’re photo of the box art shows a new version of the Wii Remote will be included in the package.  This new Wii Remote + apparently has Motion Plus built into the system and if you look the Wii Remote is slightly different than before.

I’ve sent word to Nintendo asking about this new controller and we may hear about it at Nintendo’s event next Wednesday.  So, are you guys interested in a Wii Remote with Motion Plus built in and would you buy another controller if you already have 4, or in my case 7?

Play Wii Games Like Doctor Who

September 7, 2010 Leave a comment

I know that the Doctor Who games have not been announced as coming here to the United States, but that doesn’t make me want this Wii Remote any less.  The BBC has teamed up with a peripheral maker to create this beauty that will hit alongside the Wii release of Doctor Who: Return to Earth for Wii.  The DS will also be getting a stylus shaped like the iconic Sonic Screwdriver from the television series as well.

It does look terribly uncomfortable to hold NES style, but as a regular Wii Remote it could be pretty fun to say you’ve got your own Sonic Screwdriver to play the next Legend of Zelda game with.

Wii Party Buddies Up With the Wii Remote

August 27, 2010 2 comments

For anyone that’s in the market for a new Wii Remote you’ll have to look no further than October’s Wii Party.  Nintendo has announced that the game will come bundled with a controller, all for the low, low price of $49.99.  The strategy worked for games like Wii Play, which came bundled with software for the same price.  It can be argued that this is shaping up to be a better deal.  Wii Play was a fairly simple mini-game collection that offered a few minutes of fun, but ultimately wasn’t a very great game.

Wii Party is positioning itself as the next Mario Party style game and has much more content in it.  The Wii Remote alone is a $40 value so you’re essentially getting the game for $10.  This is a really great deal if you need another controller to round out your collection.  The deal is less enticing for people like me who at last count have 7 Wii Remotes.

Sign of the Times?

August 10, 2010 Leave a comment

NES Controllers don't work like this either.

Is it a sign you’ve played WAY too much New Super Mario Bros Wii when you try to shake the Wii Remote when you’re playing the original Super Mario Bros. to get Mario to jump just a little bit further?  Yes while playing level 1-1 in Super Mario Bros. I realized I wasn’t going to hit the top of the flag so I shook the Wii Remote to try to get Mario to get up just a little bit to reach that top part of the flag pole.

Is that sad, or is it a sign of just how instinctive motion control has become to some people that when you’re playing older games with similar mechanics you try to use motion control even when you know it won’t do anything?

Mad Catz revealed today several exclusively designed controllers that will be released along with Call of Duty: Black Ops later this year.

Mad Catz has an exclusive Wii Remote & Nunchuk combination coming out for Call of Duty: Black Ops, along with a protective silicone cover for the Wii Remote.

Take a look:

I think it is an interesting design, and I’m glad to see them doing it.

To see the other controllers and even a mouse/mouse pad, hit up GamesRadar.com.

What do you think, are these something you can see yourself playing Call of Duty: Black Ops with when it releases later this year?

Early Details Have Me Interested in Wii Party

June 3, 2010 1 comment

I’m a sucker for a party game.  My kids and I regularly get together and play Mario Party 8 together.  I’ve been waiting for the announcement of Mario Party 9, but that hasn’t happened.  Instead we get some details about a game called Wii Party.  There was very little information about the game and only a couple of screenshots to speculate on.  Now HMV says that they have some details on just three of the games that will be featured in the Living Party Mode.  This was a mode that during a recent earnings briefing, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said would only be possible because of the Wii Remote.

Wanwan Karuta
The Wiimote for each of four players plays back a different sound. Which sound matches the animal that’s shown on screen?
Remote Control Hide and Seek
Hide your Wiimote somewhere in the room and have other players search for it, relying only on the sound made by the Wiimote.
Sensitive Bomb
Hold the Wiimote like a bomb, and try to pass it off to other players without shaking it.

The last two are the most interesting in my opinion to hear about.  The Sensitive Bomb game makes me wonder if the game will use Motion Plus to get that extra level of sensitivity.  Hide and Seek will be a great mode and another of the interesting ways that the speaker can be used.  According to the report we can expect over 80 mini-games to be included when the game launches.  Wii Party has not been officially announced for North America, but you can probably expect to see some details about the game when E3 rolls around in a couple of week.

BOSS Wii Remote Shell Review

December 18, 2009 Leave a comment

Howdy:

  • Button size is nice.
  • Good weight in your hands.

See Ya’:

  • Dock that holds Wii Remote can be uncomfortable.
  • Some might find the buttons too big.

I’ll be completely honest and say that when I first saw the BOSS controller shell on the internet I didn’t think much of it.  It looked like a useless piece of plastic.  Now that I’ve gotten my hands on the shell I can say I was wrong.

The BOSS, which stands for Big Oversided Super Shell, controller is essentially a housing that fits on top of your Wii Remote that makes the buttons bigger.  There are a number of people who have said they don’t like the small buttons and the d-pad on the Wii Remote and this controller shell eliminates the problem.  The buttons on the BOSS controller shell overlay just right so that pressing the buttons corresponds to hitting the proper button on the Wii Remote.  In your hand it feels a lot like a Super Nintendo Controller.  There is a bit of heft to it, but not so much that it becomes uncomfortable.  The Wii Remote sitting below it gives the feeling of holding a very nice well made controller and this does not feel in any way that it was cheaply made.

The Wii Remote fits snugly into place and I tested this out with both the standard first party Wii Remote as well as the Nyko Wand.  Both controllers fit into the BOSS quite nicely, and there was no wiggle room that would cause the buttons to not be pressed properly.  It locks into place with a little movable dock that will keep if from falling out during play.

Just like any other Wii product it has been designed so that the pointer can still be used and unlike the NERF Wii Wheel we showed you earlier this week there is absolutely no issues with the pointer on this shell.  The only issue I had with the controller is that the little dock section where the Wii Remote sits rubs against my pointer finger on my left hand.  It’s not uncomfortable, it was just something that felt different and was brought to my attention.

I was skeptical when I first saw the controller, but after getting my hands on the product I’m convinced there are people out there who might really like this product.  If you don’t play a lot of games that need the Classic Controller and all its buttons or you just want something that makes the buttons on your controller bigger then this is a product you should check out.  Folks with bigger hands will really find these buttons more to their liking than the smaller buttons on the Wii Remote.

Final Score: 3/5 Average

New Wii Remote Colors Coming

December 14, 2009 Leave a comment

Along with the announcement of Nintendo’s release calendar for 2010 there was also news concerning new Wii Remote Colors.  Beginning February 14th, Happy Valentine’s Day everyone, Nintendo will be releasing two new colors for their Wii Remote.  You will be able to get either a pink or blue Wii Remote to go with the white and black versions already available.

It looks like Nintendo is getting around the problem of Wii Motion Plus by bundling them in with every remote in the future.  The black Wii remote already comes with a Motion Plus attached and these two new colors will as well, but it looks like you’ll have to have the standard white Motion Plus attached because they’re not colored to match the Wii Remote.  These two new colors will be bundled with Motion Plus and will cost the same at retail as the current black remote costs.

Wii Remote One of the Best Gadgets of the Decade

November 27, 2009 Leave a comment

Paste Magazine has just released their list of the top 20 Gadgets of the Decade.  This is from the year 2000 until the present.  In the top 20 there are a number of different devices ranging from the iPod to Tivo.  All three major consoles are also represented, but the Wii takes the top gaming spot with the Wii Remote entering their list at #5.  This device has changed the way a number of people look at gaming.  It’s been seen everywhere from gamer’s homes to nursing homes to hospitals.  The Wii Remote controls robots that disarm bombs, PCs and even helps in rehab.

I think it’s safe to say that even Nintendo couldn’t have predicted all the uses for their little white remote.
