Reporting anything April 1st each year is a nightmare. Companies try to one up each other by coming up with the craziest possible things to announce. Sometimes those jokes get turned into real games. Other times you just get angry at all the fake junk coming out. Well, here’s my dream scenario for what happens tomorrow and it involves Capcom. This is fake. 150% fake. It’s absolutely untrue. Let’s get that out of the way right now, but wouldn’t it be great if it happened?
Capcom puts out a press release tomorrow. It looks something like this.
Osaka, Japan (April 1st, 2015) – “You’ve been asking for him for years. He’s back.”
The Blue Bomber is back. The last time you officially saw Mega Man was with the release of Mega Man 10 back in 2010. In that time members of the development team have moved on and Mega Man’s future was uncertain. We can proudly announce that his return is imminent.
Capcom, in conjunction with famed Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune and his development team, have been working hard on the next step of the Mega Man franchise. Coming this Summer you’ll see Mega Man like you’ve never seen him before.
“The Mega Man franchise has always been near and dear to my heart. It was something that I hated having to step away from. I’m pleased to be working together once again with Capcom to bring the character back to life,” says Mr. Inafune.
We don’t have many more details to share with you at this time. We can announce that Mega Man will be launching this summer for Xbox one, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, Playstion®4 computer entertainment system, Playstation® Vita, Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems.
Then the two companies go silent. The only thing you hear is that Kaio: King of Pirates was the codename for the new game as the two companies didn’t want to let the cat out of the bag. You hear nothing from them. They only respond to inquiries with, “we do not comment on rumor or speculation. We’ll have more details for you soon.”
Nothing else, until June at E3 when he appears on Nintendo’s E3 Direct with Mr. Iwata to show off Mega Man. That’s all it’s called. They’re completely rebooting the franchise. Inafune and Mr. Iwata announce that Mega Man will be available immediately following the presentation on Wii U and 3DS. It will be out the following week on PS4 and Xbox One.
Not only do you have the inevitable, “it’s all an April Fool’s Day joke”. Mega Man is dead. Capcom doesn’t want to do anything with the franchise. They play it up. They stay silent until E3 and you get a surprise release.
That’s what I want to see.
