The controversy around region-locking has been a topic of much debate for years and one we hear regularly about in the Nintendo community. If systems were region-free, games not getting localized would be a non-issue if the game is released somewhere else in your language. The topic of region-locking is also something that has been brought to Nintendo’s attention time and time again.
The topic was also brought up during the recent Q&A session with investors. Luckily, Cheesemeister, who’s known for translating gaming related news, took to NeoGAF to translate the session. According to the translated question, Iwata says Nintendo is investigating making the NX region-free.
Removing region-locking from current game machines presents various issues, so we don’t consider that to be very realistic. However, regarding NX, given the customer feedback and proposals from the market, while nothing has been decided yet, we’re currently investigating internally what problems there would be in realizing it. You can think of that as the current situation. I understand your desire, so I’d like to look at it optimistically going forward.
I, for one, really hope the NX is region-free. I hope region-locking is something that gets put to rest and becomes a thing of the past. Region-locking, in my opinion, is horrible for games. I really hope that they put an end to it and we never have to deal with this horrible practice ever again.
