Ubisoft held a live stream earlier today where they officially unveiled the next installment of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. It’s called Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. It takes place in Victorian Era London and stars a brother and sister named Jacob and Evie Frye.
Ubisoft began by admitting they made some misteps with the development and release of Assassin’s Creed: Unity, going so far as to say parts of the game were just bad. Development of this new game is being headed up by a new studio, Ubisoft Quebec. They are taking over the reins from Ubisoft Montreal, though as with any game in the series, a large number of the companies studios are working on the project.
New elements of the game include Jacob’s primary weapon, the kukri. It’s a blade similar to a machete (which will feel familiar to anyone who played Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry) that was created in Nepal. Also new is Jacob’s rope launcher. According to the developer he’ll be able to use this weapon to scale buildings in seconds and zipline over huge gaps in the environment. At one point they showed him jumping off a building, firing the zipline out and then landing on an enemy on a rooftop below him. The last new weapon they showed off was the hallucinogenic dart. When Jacob or Evie fire these off they will put out a huge cloud of gas that will cause anyone caught within its radius to go temporarily insane and fight even their closest allies. It’s very similar to the darts that have been in the most recent game, though it seems to have more of an effect and be able to affect more people at once.
Set in 1868 Jacob and Evie will inhabit seven boroughs of London, including many of the slum areas where the Assassins are hoping to start a revolution against the aristocracy. To do so they’ll get involved in gang wars looking to win over the city’s toughest inhabitants to the side of the Assassins as they take on their centuries old rivals the Templars. They lead a group called the Rooks who lead their underground war against the Templars that run the city.
No Assassin’s Creed game would be complete without some fast mode of transportation. This time around the Assassins have use of the cities iconic carriages. You know exactly what they look like if you’ve seen any movie of the era. During the demo they showed off a high speed chase section using the carriages where Jacob was chasing a high ranking Templar known as Bloody Nora through the streets of London. He carriage jacks a ride from an unsuspecting passerby and took off in pursuit of Nora. It looked fast, crazy and at times a bit out of control.
You can see more in the footage below of one of the members of the development team playing through a part of the game.
Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate is set to come out on October 23rd for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
