With the soccer world deep in the midst of a corruption scandal it’s nice for fans of the game to have some good news. EA Sports has announced that for the first time you’ll be able to play as women in their FIFA soccer game. FIFA 16 will feature 12 women’s national teams; Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, and the United States.
“Bringing some of the best women’s players and teams in the world to our franchise is a massive event for EA SPORTS, and we are equally excited about bringing millions of fans a new way to play,” said David Rutter, VP and GM, EA SPORTS FIFA. “We’re making sure fans get an authentic experience when playing with Women’s National Teams thanks to our innovative player capture and reference tools, as well as the sophisticated gameplay platform which we will continue to innovate on in FIFA 16.”
These new teams will be available in specific modes of the game. You can choose to play as them in Kick Off, Offline Tournaments and Online Friendly matches. They will not, however, be able to play against the men. EA said that this was to keep the game as authentic as possible because there are no opportunities in the real world sport for women to play against the men.
This also isn’t just a quick swap of some small body features to make them appear like women. The character models were changed to move like women move. Motion capture sessions were done with many of the world’s most famous female soccer players including Abby Wambach, Sydney Leroux and Megan Rapinoe. Animations, down to individual hairs, were changed to feel more authentic.
The timing of this announcement, despite the corruption scandal going on with FIFA, is perfect with the start of the Women’s World cup happening in Canada next week. All eyes are on the women’s game. FIFA 16 will not feature the tournament, however.
Check out the trailer past the break. FIFA 16 will be available on September 22nd for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PC.
