Nintendo sells hardware and they sell a lot of it. Since the debut of the NES back in 1985 there have been more than 270 million Nintendo systems sold across all generations. Today Nintendo announced that the 3DS joins the list of Nintendo hardware to reach the 15 million unit mark.
“Software sells hardware.” That’s been a saying at Nintendo for more than 30 years. The 3DS went on sale back in 2011 and since that time games like Super Mario 3D Land, Pokemon X &Y, Mario Kart 7, Super Smash Bros. and many more have helped the system reach that milestone.
Much of the recent success of the system comes thanks to the release of the “new” 3DS. That system has helped Nintendo see a 50% gain in sales through the first half of 2015 compared to the same time the year before.
How high will the 3DS reach? Who knows, but if great games continue to be released on the system it will probably continue to sell.
