“Ever sinceSplatoonlaunched on May 29 in the United States, we’ve seen thousands of people go online to have fun in this colorful, chaotic competition.” – Reggie Fils-Aime, President, Nintendo of America
Thousands doesn’t begin to cover it. Nintendo has announced that Splatoon has reached the one million units sold mark worldwide. That’s a big deal for a brand new IP that people weren’t entirely sure about when it was first announced last year. A new weapon just dropped for the game and content continues to roll out on a regular basis expanding the game even more.
The units sold breaks out to be more than 476,000 in the Americas, 368,000 in Japan, more than 230,000 in Europe and 20,000 in Australia and New Zealand. Those numbers account for both physical and digital versions of the game sold though no breakdown was given as to what percentages of those numbers were physical vs digital.
Splatoon was featured as one of the games in the recent Nintendo World Championships and has been spoken mostly positively by people who have played the game. How high will the sales numbers for this new IP get? We won’t know for a while, but it looks like Nintendo has another hit on their hands.
