Nintendo is becoming so scatterbrained about what exactly they’re trying to do with amiibo. Every game does something different. Sometimes they lock content behind the figures. Sometimes they don’t. Sometimes they unlock in game currency or items, sometimes they don’t. There doesn’t really seem to be any sort of unified direction for the line of figures.
Most recently the amiibo for Splatoon were used to unlock special single player levels that were exclusive to people that owned those figures. Naturally people began to question whether this was going to be the norm going forward. Mr. Miyamoto recently talked about the amiibo support in the upcoming Star Fox Zero. This is what he had to say:
“In terms of being able to unlock content, I don’t really want to go down that path. For this game, I think of it more as, for people who have the Amiibo, they’re going to get a little something extra and that’s how I’m planning on it with this game. So rather than actual abilities or things like that changing in the game, it would be like getting a different skin for the Arwing or something like that.”
So, no that game won’t lock any content behind any amiibo. You’ll just get special skins for your vehicles and things like that, which has been done before. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy Plus on the 3DS allowed you to unlock skins for your planes based on the different characters.
Hopefully one day we’ll all know exactly what amiibo do and what they’re for.
