Of the major toys-to-life style games on the market right now Activision’s Skylanders franchise was the first and is arguably the biggest name in the genre. They’re not content to just rest on their laurels, however, always trying out new things to make their games more interesting. This time they’re going to let players take the fight online. New to the series is online co-op for the Adventure Mode. You and a friend will be able to hook up together online to take the fight to Kaos this time around.
That’s not all, though. With the addition of vehicles to the series they’re adding an new racing mode. This new mode can be played with up to two players locally or four players online. The Starter Set for Skylanders SuperChargers will come with six race tracks; two on land, two on water and two in the air. You’ll be able to find hidden routes and power ups to help you win each race. Also available at launch of the game are three new Racing Action Packs. These racing packs are optional but each will come with three new toys, including one SuperCharger, that character’s signature vehicle and a villain trophy. The villain trophy unlocks two new tracks and new modes, including SuperVillain Cup, Boss Pursuit and Mirror Cup.
The franchise up to this point has done a really good job of keeping everything in the world, but still not being afraid to break the fourth wall. In the last game Kaos knew there was somebody controlling the Skylanders and he used that knowledge to take over your controller at one point. I’ll be very interested to see just how they handle this new gameplay mechanic in the Skylanders Universe.
Skylanders SuperChargers will be available in North America on Septermber 20th for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4 and Wii U.
