We don’t talk a lot about rumors on this site because the information can never be completely confirmed. We don’t like to talk about generalities and speculation because it changes so often from one minute to the next, especially when it concerns new hardware. However, there are some times when statements can really be mis-interpreted and the President of the Pokemon Company recently made one of those statements that seems to talk about just what NX is going to be. That statement also happens to coincide with various rumors about the system that have been circulating over the past few months.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal Tsunekazu Ishihara was talking about the future of Pokemon. As can be expected he was asked about the NX and confirmed that the company was working on games for the system. That’s not unexpected. If there is a Nintendo system out there it will have a Pokemon game. However it’s one specific part of his statement that really caught people’s attention:
“The NX is trying to change the concept of what it means to be a home console device or a hand-held device.”
That part of his interview seems to really cement the idea of the NX being a hybrid between a console and a handheld. We’ve heard statements like this from game executives in the past and they’re always very careful with their wording. They talk specifically about the platform that they’re working with and this statement mentions both a handheld and console system. Why would he word his statement like this if NX wasn’t a hybrid of the two?
NX is scheduled to be released in March of 2017. As of this moment we still have no official word from Nintendo about their next system. Compared to new hardware launches in the past at this point in time we’d know almost everything there is to know about the system before it launches. That means that either NX isn’t coming out in March as was previously announced or we’re very close to an official unveiling of the system. I really hope it’s the latter and not the former in this case.
