If you asked me which game during last week’s Nintendo Presentation stood out the most I’d probably point to the game developed by Swedish game developer Niklas Hallin called Yono and the Celestial Elephants. First it reminds me a bit of an old top down Zelda game. Second it stars one of the two most adorable elephants in all of video games. (Don’t ask me to choose between this and Shantae. I can’t do it.)
The story, according to the press release:
Elephants are a mighty protectors of the world, born from the stars once per millennium. This is the age of Elephant Yono. But Yono is still so very young and in a kingdom inhabited by feudal Humans, undead Bonewights and robotic Mekani, it’s not easy to keep one’s trunk out of trouble.
Yono was developed by Niklas alone over the course of two years and will be coming to Switch as a console exclusive title. He scrimped and saved and worked on this game while working as a freelance game artist.
Four towns full of people, shops, and sidequests, as well as three deep dungeons await you as you protect the world around you. If you’ve ever wanted to discuss ethics with the undead or free will with robots now would be the best time. And seriously, what’s more adorable than an elephant with a chicken on its head?
Yono and the Celestial Elephants will be available on Switch and on PC through Steam on October 12th.
