SteelSeries Arctis Bluetooth Headset Review

I’ve used many different headsets and pair of headphones in my years. Some of them far better than others. For daily use when I’m listening to podcasts at work I’ve been using a pair of $1 earbuds that I got at Walmart. For that they work fantastically. For playing games or podcasting you needs something a little better. A few weeks ago we were sent a pair of the SteelSeries Arctis 3 Bluetooth headphones to try out. I’ve been using them for a few weeks now and I love them.

Arctis 2In terms of design they’re quite simply the most comfortable headset I’ve ever used. They’re larger than many headsets I’ve tried before, but they’re not any heavier. They have a nice thick plastic band connecting them together. It’s sturdy and feels like it will hold up well to any wear and tear. They can be adjusted to fit your head through the use of an elastic band that stays in place with velcro. It’s simple to use, easy to adjust and comfortable against your head. If you’re the only one using the headphones you should be able to set it and forget it. The velcro holds very nicely. I didn’t really need to adjust them out of the box and have not had any issues with them slipping.

The ear cups are, in terms of comfort, the best I’ve ever used. They’re made of a very soft foam, which is covered in an even softer cloth material, that fits snuggly around your ears. They’re so soft that you almost forget they’re there. I also never noticed any issues with sweating or moisture build up even after prolonged usage. They don’t seal tightly around my ears and they do let some outside noise in, but I found it to be minimal at best and didn’t interfere with the sound quality in any way.

Arctis 4The microphone for the headset tucks away nicely inside the left ear cup when you’re not using it. I found this to be really nice as it was easy to pull the microphone out when needed and easy to put away when you just want to listen to music or a Youtube video. You also don’t have to worry about losing it like you would a detachable microphone and it’s out of the way when not needed.

Other controls on the left ear cup include a volume wheel a mute button and the various ports for charging the headset (as it can be used in a wireless fashion) or connecting a cord to plug into different devices. The right ear cup includes the bluetooth connection button. Connecting to any other bluetooth devices was incredibly simple.

The audio quality of the headphones themselves will vary from person to person and your needs in a headset. Using them for everyday use, listening to Youtube videos or playing games works very nicely. The sound quality is very balanced between the high end and low end sounds. I found when playing games like Project Diva Future Tone I preferred my HyperX Cloud Stinger set as the base end of that headset was a little higher and the music sounded richer. It’s not bad in any way. I just think there are better headsets out there if you are looking for something when listening to music.

Arctis ConnectorsThe headset was pitched to me as a great headset to use for playing games on the Switch and wanting to do voice chat. In that regard this headset works incredibly well. It’s capable of connecting to a device via bluetooth and through a wired connection at the same time and because of that using it with the Switch makes it the best headset I’ve used so far, especially if you’re playing the Switch in handheld mode.

Connecting the device to your phone or tablet to use Discord (or Nintendo’s online app for Splatoon) is wireless so you’ll only have one wired connection t the headset at any one time, reducing the need to have a spaghetti set of wires connected to your head. You can then plug the headset into the Switch using the wired connection. This works in both handheld and docked modes. You’ll just have to make sure you have a long enough cord to reach the Switch if you have it docked.

I have found myself using this headset at work to make calls over VOIP and it works beautifully. The sound quality is great for audio calls. It’s easy to hear people on the other line and I never once had any issues with them being able to hear me. I wouldn’t recommend this headset for recording podcasts or streaming to Twitch or Youtube as the microphone isn’t the highest quality you’ll find, but for every day gaming and even making phone calls it’s a great headset to use.

The SteelSeries Arctis Bluetooth Headset is simply one of the best headsets I’ve ever used, especially in terms of comfort. Everything about this headset feels good on your head. The sound quality is very good, especially in gaming or video experiences. The ability to be connected to both a device like the Switch and a phone at the same time means you have plenty of options for what you want to hear at any given time. If you’re in the market for a headset (especially if Nintendo ever gets around to really implementing voice chat in any way) you should check out this particular headset.
